Music Rising from Thin Air
Have you ever seen music being created without a single touch to an instrument, using only the movements of hands in the air?
The famous interactive performance-lecture “Theremin: From Lenin to Led Zeppelin” is coming to Istanbul for the very first time. This unique event will be hosted by Peter Theremin, one of the world’s leading theremin virtuosos, a composer, and the great-grandson of legendary Russian physicist Leon Theremin, the inventor of the instrument.
The theremin is the world’s first touchless electronic musical instrument, invented by Russian physicist Leon Theremin in 1919. The history of this instrument reads like a thrilling adventure novel, where the destinies of geniuses, politicians, and rock stars collide.
What Will You Learn?
The event’s title perfectly captures the incredible journey the instrument took throughout the 20th and 21st centuries: Vladimir Lenin, Arturo Toscanini, Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin... Classical music geniuses such as Shostakovich, Schnittke, Rybnikov, and Kabalevsky composed works specifically for this instrument.
The mesmerizing sound of the theremin has echoed through Soviet and American cinema, as well as in the music of Led Zeppelin, Sting, Pink Floyd, The Tiger Lillies, The Beatles, Jean-Michel Jarre, and many other legendary names.
You will hear how Vladimir Lenin personally tried playing the theremin in the Kremlin, and how Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin were captivated by it.
You will learn how Led Zeppelin’s legendary guitarist Jimmy Page used the theremin in the cult song Whole Lotta Love.
You will discover why this instrument became the “lead voice” of classic American sci-fi cinema and why astronaut Neil Armstrong took theremin recordings with him on his voyage to the Moon.
In this captivating presentation by Peter Theremin, you will also learn what poet Osip Mandelstam thought about the theremin, when aliens will hear its sound, why extraterrestrials always invade Earth to the accompaniment of theremin music, and much more.

This gathering, which will completely transform your perception of sound, consists of two parts:
